Written Exam Rubric

Each question will be graded using this rubric. In short, an A thesis will be clear, thoughtful, and analytical... it will be more than a statement of fact. You will support your thesis with at least three, well developed examples. Your response will be organized in a meaningful way.

Homework for Thursday

Please read the Emancipation Proclamation, which you can find here.

Answer the following questions on a sheet of paper, which will be collected.

  1. Copy from the text who will be freed.
  2. In your OWN words, who will be freed?
  3. How will the federal government know which states are in rebellion?
  4. In which states (specify which) will slaves be freed?
  5. In which states will slaves NOT be freed?
  6. Why do you think Lincoln did not free all the slaves? Answer briefly in about 3-4 sentences.
  7. What is asked of the newly freed slaves?
  8. How was this justified?
  9. Do you think this was a wise decision by the federal government? Why or why not?
  10. Predict three or four consequences of this action for each: the North and the South.
