Hi everyone,
I'm sorry I couldn't be with you all yesterday, and I'm also sorry to hear that my sub plans didn't make it to school on time. You were supposed to continue with Gone with the Wind, but we will have to hold that for another time. On Thursday, we will continue looking at the economies of the north and south.

Remember that your homework was due YESTERDAY (259-265), and it WILL be collected on Thursday. In addition, you are to read 265-271 for Thursday, and take notes on that section.

1. What were the reasons for the rapid increase in population between 1820 and 1840? What were the effects of this increase?
2. What were the major immigrant groups that came to the United States and where did they settle?
3. What population shifts took place between 1820 and 1840? How did they affect political divisions?
4. Why was the rise of New York City so phenomenal? What forces combined to make it America's leading city?
5. How did the foreign-born population become a major factor in American political life between 1820 and 1850? What elements considered this an "alien menace" and what was their response?

As you know, health care plans and health care reform was one of the major issues of the 2008 presidential campaign. Today, President Obama nominated his appointee to the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services, and this person will be largely responsible for carrying out Obama's health care plan.

No one may use this event for his/her CE portfolio, but since I am in a post snow day good cheer, I might toss an extra credit point or two toward anyone who comments on this event in this post, identifying him/herself.
